Community Programming

Fandoms Unite: At Grey Havens, we believe in fostering community and embracing the imagination. One of the ways we do that is through our Fandoms Unite programming. These interactive, multi-fandom events bring children and teens together through the power of shared experience. Read more about how we believe Trivia isn’t Trivial, and check out all the different programs we’ve made available below.

Since our beginnings in 2013, we’ve had the privilege of hosting interactive Fandoms Unite events in Longmont, Lafayette, Erie, Firestone, and Greeley. Are you interested in bringing Grey Havens YA and Fandoms Unite to your library or community center? Please comment below, email us at greyhavensya@gmail.com, or phone the TARDIS to contact us. We’d be thrilled to work with you!

Because we are a growing non-profit run solely on volunteer power, an honorarium is always appreciated for our programming, and we are quite sure it’ll be worth it for you and the children and young adults in your community.

What is Fandoms Unite?

A night of trivia, sing-a-longs, crafts, and other fun nerdy adventures. We often do general nerdy trivia that encompasses all the Fandoms, or sometimes we do trivia specific to one particular fandom, such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Doctor Who. In addition, our other themes include:

Fandom Theater – A night of acting that involves improv with fandom characters, scenes from our favorite movies and television shows, tongue-twisters (like saying Raxicalicofalipitoris five times fast), warm-ups, and the Nerd Circle.

FandomTheater(03)

Fitness for Nerds – A night of working up a sweat in all the nerdiest of ways, such as Star Wars Yoga, dancing like the Doctor, running after the TARDIS, dancing like Baby Groot, dragon training, and lots more dancing!

Table-top Games Any games that our young adults want to play. We guarantee you that this will be a fun night!

Harry Potter Parties – Wizard Rock, captions contests, and Yule Ball festivities. Note– we can turn any fandom into a party!

Fandom Classes Our core members put together presentations to educate the public about their fandoms. Topics include: Galifreyan, Fandom Terms, the Star Trek Universe, Surviving Your First Con, How to Play Magic the Gathering, Theories of Time Travel, Anime and Their Voice Actors, and more!

Cosplay Basics – Want to learn how to look like your favorite character? Not sure how to Cosplay when you only have what’s already in your closet? Just interested in nerdy costumes in general? You’ll love our Cosplay Basics event.

*Prefects/Junior Prefects: Wizard-themed programming for families with kids as young as eight! Check out our latest blog post to learn about how we are bringing these programs to Erie and Carbon Valley libraries. You can also phone the TARDIS or email us at greyhavensya@gmail.com to be added to our magical mailing list. We are always up for a challenge, and we would be happy to work with you to provide something new, even if it’s not something we’ve done before.

Let us know how we can help you celebrate geek culture in your community, and be sure to bookmark our site and Like us on Facebook to keep up with our latest events and insights. Remember: Being a nerd is not about what you love, it’s about how you love it!

  1. Hi Kelly,

The Ashworths (members of the Girl Scout troop for which I’m a leader) gave me your name to talk to as I volunteer at a Girl Scout day camp in the summer and the day I am putting together will be based on Harry Potter. The Ashworths shared with me some of the activities from the summer camp your group puts on and I wanted to ask you a few questions, if you wouldn’t mind sharing information. Our camp in no way competes with yours. We have a movie theme for our week and Harry Potter only makes up one morning of activities. I would also be interested in talking to you about the possibility of even hiring some of your group members to run activities for our camp that morning. I know Bella Mendoza is a member of Grey Havens as well as attends this Girl Scout day camp as a program aid.

Thank you! I look forward to speaking with you.
