Remembering Tolkien on the Day of the Dead

Longmont, Colorado is not only home to Grey Havens YA and its parent organization, the Grey Havens Group, it is also the home to a beloved annual exhibition celebrating Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead. The exhibit features beautiful altars, carefully constructed labors of love, honoring the lives of those who changed ours. This year, the Grey Havens Group and Grey Havens YA contributed an altar in memory of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and the first book Grey Havens YA ever discussed as a group, The Hobbit.

These are the skulls decorated by our YA members. You really have to see them in person to appreciate all the inspired details. For photos of the altar itself, click on this link.

The exhibition runs through November 9 at the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center at 400 Quail Road Longmont, Colorado.

Send us an owl: Has an author who is no longer living inspired you enough to remember him or her on the Day of the Dead? If so, who?
